Brief except from the episode:
Functional strength training the official definition; is a classification of exercise which involves training the body for the activities performed in daily life. We also like to expand that to sports.
One of the first introductions of functional strength training in the physical therapy world came from Gary Gray. He started to get away from single plane exercises (think dumbbell curl) that dominated physical therapy. Functional strength training got the profession to start thinking about controlled movement patterning and get away from just thinking what does one muscle do.
What this comes down to is making sure the exercises address the movements of the activity or sport to be performed. This can be broken into it’s parts or to the portion of the movement that is limiting or dyskinetic.
