Brief overview of the episode:

Discectomy aka Diskectomy, microdiscectomy, disk decompression, percutaneous discectomy is when part of a damaged spinal disk is removed. This will be done when non-surgical treatment has not provided adequate relief from pain or when there is atrophy, loss of sensation, numbness that does not improve with change in position or most significantly there are bowel and bladder issues.
Surgery for spinal disk issues is done though a minimally invasive procedure where the damaged portion of the disk is removed. Surgical success rates are better in the first 3 months when compared to non-surgical treatments. However, by 1 year both surgery and non-surgery groups have similar outcomes and in 5 years the surgical group has slightly worse outcomes.
Physical therapy treatment is highly effective in eliminating the symptoms associated with disk herniation/bulge/rupture. There are very few cases where physical therapy is not at least attempted in the management of pain and function loss associated with spinal disk issues.
