Brief overview of the episode:
A modality is any application of a therapeutic agent. When referring to physical therapy most often we are discussing, E-Stim, Ultrasound, Cryo/Thermal therapies, Iontophoresis, Phonophoresis, Light Therapy, Laser Therapy, Shockwave therapy, paraffin wax, and sometimes diathermy.
The goal with using any modality is to help a patient improve. This can be to reduce pain, increase range of motion, decrease guarding, and allow for increased participation in exercise and daily activities.
There is contention about which modalities offer meaningful benefits and the science with some is not strong. With that being said if someone feels that there is a benefit and there is no downside or negative consequence why not try a modalities even if the evidence dose not strongly support its use.
